I would suggest heading directly up the draw that runs down the middle of the spine seen in this picture.

Are the rugged features in the right background part of the summit area?

When you look at Canyon Mountain from the North it has a long circular rim with the highest point actually being in the center of the rim. This vantage point is the east end of that rim, with the highpoint being the big triangular rock near the right edge of the picture.
