I think you are referring to all the "dead" trees?

Those are bristlecone pines, and often they look more dead than alive -- there may be just one 4" strip of bark/cambium on a tree.

But yes, there have been fires up and down that ridge many times. I often find burned trees, probably from lightning strikes.

I've been on 3 different routes up the south side of Mummy (not the area near the typical scree) -- nice routes (though recently someone put fixed ropes over the most interesting spots).
