Lionel Terray (1921-1965)
Tomb in Chamonix Cemetery of famous premier French alpinist/guide Lionel Terray (picture taken July 5, 2006). Lionel made the 1rst Makalu (ranked 5th on altitude 8462m)and 1rst FitzRoy (Andes) and 2nd Eiger with Lachenal. His contribution to 1rst Annapurna (Herzog and Lachenal) was key. He wrote the classic book "Conquistadors of the Useless: From the Alps to Annapurna".Terray died on a rock climb in the Vercors, south of Grenoble, in 1965.
