Ellingwood Arete Crux Pitch [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Ellingwood Arete Crux Pitch
Dean Coble Leading the final pitch on the Ellingwood Ledges Route on Crestone Needle, CO. He has just made the crux move in this photo over an overhang (5.7). On lead with a pack at this altitude (13,900 ft.) is not as easy as a "normal" 5.7.

Sounds like you guys did the 5.9 version on the first pitch. I sure as hell don't remember an "overhang". Congrats on the climb and thanks for posting the photo.

I'll have to read up on the 5.9 variation and do some comparisons. This was the second pitch. After we got to the headwall, we climbed up a 180 ft. pitch to another ledge, then climbed directly up another dihedral crack which was probably 140 ft. After that it was a 3rd class scamble to the top.

That's exactly what I did when I climbed the route, it felt like a tough 5.7 roof not 5.9

My mental picture of this route looked considerably different. So much for my “remote viewing” skills!

At 14k, a 5.7 bulge can easily feel like a 5.9 overhang. Especially after a thousand feet of climbing. Thanks for posting this picture of the crux. One of the best beta photos I've seen of this pitch.
