i enjoyed flipping through your photos as well--i think you're more brave than i am to go caving (to tell you the truth caving scares the shit out of me!)
the poincare quote was an old physics professor's answer when one student asked why someone would choose a career in physics. i think it's a very good explanation for why we put ourselves through it, and i think the ideal case is to find something beautiful and interesting that also happens to be useful (that way someone will pay you to study it.)
i'm still working on that last part :)
