Spider-Formidable Col South face [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Spider-Formidable Col South face
The photo shows the West and East notches of the Spider-Formidable Col as seen from the Flat Creek Cirque (i.e. looking north onto the south face). I haven't met anyone who has done the West notch and in fact at least in an early edition of Beckies guide, he recommends the East notch. As you can see the West notch cliffs out. When we came through the East notch on 25 July 2006, the snow was good for steep steps and a good run out existed at the bottom. I recommend taking the East notch.

Eric SandboThanks!

Thanks for this photo and the look back. I thought Beckey's W notch was the one farther west, with the horizontal snow sliver. I presumed others had found a traversing descent from there, but the more I look and hear from others, the more it appears that Beckey just got in wrong in the guidebook.

But he's led the way into so many mountains, I guess we can overlook one goof.

KlenkeThe far west notch

I have camped at the west notch and can aver that it is cliffed out below. The "far west notch" by the snow sliver is accessible from the west notch (I think). I climbed up that ridge leading to it and it was doable as far as I went, which was most of the way, but I think the notch would require a rappel to get into. You might be able to traverse underneath the ridge's south side to get to the notch. But there's really no point, the terrain below the far west notch is slabby and steep and dangerous. By the time you got down it, you could have gone the east notch way and had less danger.
