Gives me a good idea about this route... I am heading up there for the 4th of July :)

Is this the steepest section of the climb? How would you measure steepest incline of this route?

Thanks!

Misha

Hi Misha,

Yeah, I saw your post that you are going up there on the 4th of July. I really thought about trying to meet up with you and joining you but will unfortunately be out of town that weekend.

The steepest section of the climb would be the very first section of the West Face (if you go that way). It is probably near 40 degrees (not more than 45 degrees) for about 400-500 feet. I went that way last year but this year we stayed to the gully on the right of that steep section and gained the West Face proper at around 10,500 ft.

Yes in this picture from Fang Rock, the route is pretty steep, and maybe a bit steeper than the rest of the route. But I would say it is still only 35 degrees, so not too bad. Most of the West Face route was between 30 and 35 degrees. Get an early morning start. We got up at 3:50am and were out of camp by 4:50am. Made it to the top of the West Face (13,384 ft) in 4 hours at 9am and to the summit a couple hours later, shortly after 11am.

Best West Face campsite is in the middle of Hidden Valley where a lone rock outcropping sits....good privacy, wind break, spot for kitchen and gets you closest to the base of the West Face.

Good luck on your trip; glad you liked the pic. Can't wait to see yours.

Brett

(p.s. I have more pics at the following address if you're interested....not great resolution, but will give you some different views nonetheless. )http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/holbrookclimbs/lst?.dir=/Shasta+2003
