Approaching the First Rocky Area [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Approaching the First Rocky Area
This grassy area appears like a little triangle from Spence Field, it is actually the first of three rocky outcrop areas. The true summit is the third. On this day, I only travelled as far as this first one before returning. October 2003

kenbolamBear Memories!

Hasn't voted

I had my first real bear encounter on Thunderhead. When I look at this image, I can still see him standing on the trail in front of me. It was a beautiful sunny day just like the picture. (I took his picture. I should post it although it's not in a digital format.)

It was on the second day of a three day hike from Fontana Dam to Clingsman Dome on the AT. I had just finished lunch at the shelter, cleaned up and headed up the trail. I had that feeling like I wasn't alone. I looked up and there he was... a beautiful black bear (400lbs plus!). We stood and looked at each other for what seemed like forever (or maybe it was just a minute...). At one point he stood up on his hind legs and I thought ... "oh shit.... here he comes!" but, he just wanted to get a better look at me. He was such a beautiful animal!

Your picture brings back a lot of memories... I was 30 back then and I'm 48 now but the memory still makes the hair stand-up on the back of my neck... thank you!

I need to get back out again before I'm too old! Just too many responsibilites :-(
