so this seems to be a sandsone with some gravel in it?

Sort of correct, but it eats your fingertips like nothing else because the crystal size is generally quite large so the rock is rough. Around the edges of the gritstone areas it becomes more of a sandstone and there are some places nearby with red sandstone, like Frodsham, see this site:
