This is the only octagonal privy I have ever encountered. I assume the blueprints were lost after this privy was constructed as I have never seen another 6 sided loo. The screening all around provided nice ventilation and facilitated conversation with those waiting in line, all the while providing plenty of visual shielding where necessary. On the Appalachian Trail in eastern Vermont, not far from Dartmouth (Happy Hill Shelter?) "Sloth" (pictured) used this as his thinking spot.
