Garden Wall, Dawn [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Garden Wall, Dawn
From Point 8479, this is part of Glacier National Park's Garden Wall, a knife-edge ridge on the Continental Divide and which leads to Mount Gould. From this vantage point, as you can see, there are excellent views of Upper Grinnell Lake, Grinnell Glacier, Salamander Glacier, and Gem Glacier. And what looks like fog below and right of the ridge is actually a smoke inversion caused by the 2003 fires. From the porch at Granite Park Chalet at night, we could see the flames in the valleys below. This was both spectacular and ominous.

"Sea of clouds trapped naturally by a mountain dam" by SP member eric b. I like that. Very much. Thanks, Eric.

From down low, this is a spectacular view. But even more so in your image from up high! --mark d.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I have yet to do the actual Grinnell Glacier trail, but it is one of the many things that keep calling me back to Glacier.

Yeah, Glacier is my number one, favorite U.S. national park (I've been to 34 of the 58). I, too, would like very much to go back. And I think I'd like to visit that vantage point from which you took that picture!

Amazing looking formation! Has anyone traversed this bad boy, or is the rock quality to iffey? If so, what is it rated? Sweet-looking ridge, & great picture.

Thanks for the comments.

I have no doubt that someone has traversed it, and I do know that you will encounter bad rock and Class 5 pitches. Together, they could be deadly, and rope isn't going to be helpful on such rotten rock. If you make it, though, what a story!

What a great way to describe it! Would you mind if I quoted you in the caption, with full credit, of course? Thanks for commenting.
