A black and yellow argiope (Argiope aurantia) waits patiently for a small flying insect to become entrapped in its web. This spider is common in meadows and gardens. Its web is a distinctive, spiraling vertical orb that radiates out from the center. When disturbed (as this one became while I was taking its picture!), it likes to retreat from the web, usually to the ground. Imaged in September 2006.

Hasn't voted | Thanks for looking, Ogre! It is widespread in much of North American (doesn't do the Rockies or the Great Basin, though). I also believe that the argiopes are seen worldwide.
I did try to take an image with the spider on a dampened web. I used a fine mist to spray the web, but that made Argiope skittish and he ran into hiding. I could have, but didn't, take an image of the entire web. But, if that's important to you, PM me with an e-mail address. Voted 10/10 | I love this shot. I have similar ones of the same type of spider, and one shot, made with a macro lens, has that colorful back filling the view in enough detail to see the dew on it. I'm glad to see someone else is willing to get so close to spiders, which I think are fascinating and beautiful creatures. I don't even kill the ones in my house; they get taken outside.
