Not a Speckled Wood

This is not a speckled wood. I was thinking it looked more like the familiar crescent. Not sure which particular species of crescent, though.

	Hasn't voted	Thanks for the correction. I've not found anything that looks just like it on the web. There is a wide variety in patterns in the various Crescent subspecies, but that looks the closest to it that I've seen so far.

	Hasn't voted	After doing some further research, it appears to be in the Fritillary family. I think it is the female Great Basin Fritillary.

	Hasn't voted	Indeed, I think you've got it. Nice sleuthing. I note your link says "no record" for outside of the blue area. Well, your picture is the new record. You might consider contacting them about your range expansion discovery.

	Hasn't voted	The experts tell me that this butterfly is a Great Spangled Fritillary, and this is within its normal range. Looks right to me now that I've seen the photo.
