in the lower canyon bottoms, where there's
flowing water and plentiful nuts and berries?
These mountains are probably much higher than they look. I need to go up there
sometime and "brush elbows" with the bears!

Hasn't voted | Larry, the peaks you see here, which are unnamed, are close to 12,000'.
The grizzlies tend to stay lower in the summer. I'm just glad if they're not taking refuge on my back. Once in this area, I actually found grizzly tracks over my own as I headed back down; fortunately, the bear was headed the other way that I was at the time!
But the trees? They're below. This is one of those areas where the Great Plains meet the Rockies; it's relatively dry here, and the upper altitudes are filled with endless meadows and tundra fields.
