Well, you know I find it quite odd. The Cascades are rampant with mosquitoes, but only once in four years of hiking having I had a negative encounter with mosquitoes in the Olympics. Flies are fairly annoying, but you can kill them off in five minutes. Yellow Jackets are more dangerous here, especially in the NE area in mid-August through early October. One friend of mine counted 80 Yellow Jacket nests in 15 miles!

One sees these photographs and rarely considers the nasty stuff that can go along with the idealic shots.

I've been hiking and backpacking in the Southern Appalachians for more than 30 years. And I have to say this is one of the most pest-free areas for outdoor activities. I know people who do encounter some biting insects in the high (well, high for the East) elevations, but I never have. I've never been bitten by a mosquitoe in the high country here, nor bothered by biting gnats or flies. And only once, three years ago on Pinnacle Mountain in SC, have I gotten a tick, which I found before he could bite.

Great picture. I have lived in Washington my whole life but have never really been out in the Olympics. I taken a few hike here and there, but nothing big. Looks a bit like areas of the Alpine lakes region, except greener. And according to you it’s a pleasant change from the bug attacks in the Cascades, which can really suck. Guess I will have to get out there!

I don't know if I know an answer to either of those questions. On the one hand, it would be an interesting little tidbit to aid my imagination. On the other, I could no longer spontaneously run into this gem if I already knew it was going to be there.
