This Is Not a Cliff! [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
This Is Not a Cliff!

This is not a cliff! It is, in fact, a Giant Sequoia that has been scarred by a lightning strike (when you're 2,000 to 3,000 or more years old and 200-250 feet tall, that's quite common!). Most of the damage occurred to the bark of the tree, which can be up to two feet thick (and is a primary reason for the longevity of these magnificent specimens). Taken while my son, Curtis, and I were hiking in Redwood Canyon, Kings Canyon National Park, CA. Imaged in June 2003.
