and pearly gates. The Hogsback shifted last year. It used to be right below the right chute into the Gates. Last year this is where it was 2/06. This year it has shifted even further to the left (20'+ maybe) and the gates are no longer the walk up they used to be. As of now the gates have a 15-20' wall of 50 degree ice. Most folks are taking the "old chute route to the west crater rim for easier access to the summit ridge. Longer but not as technical. Photographs taken at the turn of the century show the Hogsback in the position it is today. Under the pearly gates chutes. In the 1920's-1950's It shifted all the way to the west (left) couple hundred yards. Then some time in the 60's it shifted back to the chutes below the gates. It seems as though it is working itself back to the old chute again. I think it is pretty cool how it moved back and forth and quite a distance I might add. Comments [ Post a Comment ]
