A great view looking east into Middle Basin and the headwaters of the Bear River in the Stillwater Fork drainage. This basin consists of 5 major lakes: McPheters (left), Ryder, BR-17, BR-18 and Meadow Lake (BR-19), along with many other snow fed ponds and pot holes. The main trail from Christmas Meadows follows the glacial moraine for about 9 miles and provides some great fishing and a place to really enjoy 'being away from it all'. I have been in this area where I have not seen a single soul for at least a week and I'm sure you have had this experience many times yourself. Isn't this what it is all about?
In the center of the photo is 12,540 Spread Eagle peak and to the left is Ostler Peak at 12,718.
This photo was taken on August 12, 2004 on the tail end of a day hike where we crossed over this saddle from the Highline Trailhead to BR-18 to do some fishing. We had our limit by noon, so we scouted the area further to take in the beauty that resides here. A great place to find solitude and cast the problems of the day aside, if only for a little while. I find that hiking & climbing are the best recipe for remaining balanced in a imbalanced world.
