Panamint Speckled Rattlesnake
spotted in Pine Creek area of Red Rocks, Nevada on April 4, 2007 around 1:30 pm.
Actually he (or she) spotted me first. I did not see the snake,
until I heard it rattle right in front of me.
Rattlesnakes belong to the Viper family and can live up to 25 years. They are named for the rattle found at the tip of their tails that is used as a warning device when threatened.
They use their tongues to smell.
Rattlesnake bite is extremely painful and can be fatal.

Hasn't voted | Thanks ;) I don't really like to stumble upon venomous snakes, but once I'm at safe distance, then I'm glad I can get some shots. | | Posted Apr 8, 2007 10:09 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Agreed, I have been faced with bears and rattle snakes in close quarters and am more comfortable with bears. | | Posted Apr 8, 2007 10:26 pm |

Hasn't voted | Now I'm jealous. I have never seen a bear in the wild. | | Posted Apr 8, 2007 10:32 pm |
| kilimanjaro1 | How close? | |
Hasn't voted | Just how close were you when you took this? I hope you had a good long lens because I would have been getting out of there pretty quickly! | | Posted May 21, 2007 4:01 pm |

Hasn't voted | Yes, it's a telephoto shot. I was about 5 feet from this snake. Rattlesnakes are not aggresive and will not follow you or try to strike as long as you let them be and give them space. The only problem is that they blend in VERY well and are hard to spot in the first place. Cheers, Anya | | Posted May 21, 2007 5:38 pm |
| lcarreau | Nice snake shot ! | |
Voted 10/10 | Woooooops. Now you LEFT me with another QUESTION. How DOES this snake DIFFER from the Mojave Rattlesnake. Have to look it up. Thanks! | | Posted Nov 5, 2007 4:56 pm |

Hasn't voted | Mojave Rattlesnakes look greenish. This one's colors were in gray tones. I almost stepped on him! | | Posted Nov 5, 2007 5:20 pm |
