I'm always marvelled by the plants that appear to be growing straight out of the rocks.
It's a Firecracker Penstemon. I learned from my own mistakes that when trying to identyfy plants it's best to look at the shape of the leaves. Often flowers of many species can look very much alike. Cheers.

cool, thanks Anya, we do not have the books down here that we do in Canada...going to have to upgrade our library...hummingbirds were going crazy over it...we have tons of hummingbirds here at all elevations, much more friendly than the occasional one we get in Canada...cheers

""You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.""   --Rene Daumal
