The Roadrunner [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
The Roadrunner
Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) belongs to the Cuckoo Family.
This one ran across the road, while we were on our way to Pine Creek trailhead in
Red Rocks, Nevada. June 2007.

Roadrunners are famous for being quick enough to catch and eat rattlesnakes, so be nice to them.
They can reach speeds up to 17 miles per hour.
Their lifespan is about 8 years.

Thank you Kelly. This type of bird visits my garden at home quite often and he's not too afraid of me, but that one in the desert was completely wild. Soon after I got this pic, he ran off.

Yes, it's fun to see them. They always have this sneaky look in their eyes.

How long did you have to wait for this bird to give you this look?

& coyotes, two of my favorite critters!!! I'm
smiling ... what about a Chuckwalla lizard, I suppose it could hide from you! I think the Mojave desert has more Chuckwalla lizards than the Sonoran ... I don't know, I haven't counted them lately! Thanks for your vote!!!

Imagine that there is a roadrunner living in our neighbourhood. He comes over to our backyard, jumps into one of my hanging pots (which is currently empty) and just relaxes there! It is so funny. He's not even afraid of my dog. The roadrunners you see in the wild are a lot more skittish.
As for chuckwallas, I only saw it once in California desert. Have a good one!
