Cave Pearls form when water dripping into a pool loses carbon dioxide and precipitates calcite around a nucleus (a grain of sand, or fragments of soda straws). The typical roundness is due to the uniform growth of the pearl, not to any sort of rotation due to dripping…they can be square or irregular pearl also. A sphere allows the greatest amount of deposition for the smallest surface area and is thus most likely, even if the nucleus is highly irregular. The dripping causes vibrations in the pool which may prevent the pearls from cementing (with calcite) to the pool floor, though many pearls are found cemented in. Sometimes excess precipitate will form cups or nests around the pearls. Cave pearls may variate in size (this ones are quite as big as marbles, but sometimes they can can reach the size of a golf ball) and in color, it depends on minerals dissolved in water. Once the the pearls are removed by their nest or water in the pool dries out, they are bound to turn to dust again.

Hasn't voted | thanks! let's say 'somewhere in Mt. Albo, Sardinia'. I'm afraid i can't tell you the name of the cave because people who showed me kindly asked not to be too "specific". (still mapping and exploring)...not for you SP'rs but for googlers on the web, hope you'll understand. Anyway i've spotted cave pearls pretty everywhere in sardinian caves.
Cool profile pic you have :-)

Voted 10/10 | I have never seen such beautiful cave pearls, despite I've begun caving in 1986...
Think the main reason is I spent this time only in Hungary (small country, small caves), and could visit only a few greater caves in Slovenia, Italy (Gortani), and Transylvania.
Thanks for sharing this picture! | | Posted Jun 23, 2007 3:05 pm |

Hasn't voted | thank you very much for vote and comment...i wasn't expecting such positive feedback about cave pearls and i'm so glad people liked them.
You begun caving activity much earlier than me (i started out about 5 years ago...very intense, though....go caving everytime i can...which is...'once a week minimum')
no doubt you could teach me something ! ;-)
Slovenia sounds like paradise on earth for limestone/caves lovers. Never been there yet but i will definetly.
If you'll ever plan a trip to Sardinia feel free to drop me a line and it will be my pleasure to show you some nice caves.
You can choose amongst more than 4000 caves found and mapped in sardinia by now.
the largest cave system is called "su palu-su spiria": it's 46 km long and - still much more to explore.
The deepest one is only a -600 mt. No many big vertical pits like in the alps area but whatever...they're fun anyway.
ciao

Voted 10/10 | very cool! So after they are removed they turn into dust? I thought that was interesting. disappearing treasures :) | | Posted Sep 15, 2007 12:21 am |

Hasn't voted | sorry, didn't notice your comment before...
yes, to your question.
once they're removed or run off water dripping they loose their shine and their growing process stops. they're bound to turn into dust again. you nailed it: desappearing treasures. :-)
thanks again for stopping by my gallery.
