Here in Nevada (US) we have lots of "jumping cholla". These cacti reproduce vegetatively, by shedding pieces in spring. If you step on a piece, the next step may fling the joint up onto your calf -- just as your picture shows!

I don't know what these are called but it sure seems that they have the ability to jump out and grap you without even touching them. And the thorns have barbs on them so they are hard (and painful) to pull out.
