Sauk Pano [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Sauk Pano

This is a panorama of the view into the heart of North Cascades National Park as seen from Sauk Mountain, one of the prominent outlier peaks on the western front of the North Cascades.

This is an (incomplete) informational image taken with no tripod and a 70-300mm zoom lens on a spur-of-the-moment hike to near the top of Sauk Mountain. Therefore, the image more closely resembles what you could expect to see by looking through a pair of binoculars than you can see in real-life. The combination of a lack of a tripod and the zoom magnification contributes to the blurriness in the 'Original' size too, so please pardon that.

The drive to Sauk takes you to within about two miles of this point, and the hike is relatively short and easy for a peak with such a vista. I decided to drive up to Sauk Mountain on my return trip to Seattle as I passed near Rockport around 6 PM on a long, early July afternoon. And the sun was still up by the time I returned to my car.

I'll add additional peak identifiers as time permits...

NOTE: The text can best (only) be seen in the 'Original' size. Please be aware that the image is ~5400 pixels wide, requires scrolling, and is approximately 1.7 MB in size.

Disclaimer:
I'm confident in most of the identifiers, but as always with me, these are subject to correction. If I've misidentified any of these, please let me know. I could especially use help on the left hand side of the image, especially with Sourdough Mountain and the Snowfield Peak group (I'd like to get more detail here). Plus a confirmation or correction to Razorback Mountain on the right half of the image.

gimpilatorGreat Job!

Voted 10/10

This is an amazing image and you did a superb job labeling the peaks. I was there yesterday and for the most part had no idea what I was looking at. Now I know. Thanks!

Thanks.

I'd heard about Sauk from a former coworker back in the 90's. This was a completely unplanned visit. Just hung a left off of SR20 while heading home to Seattle one late afternoon. I was surprised how scenic it was for a relatively simple effort. Makes sense I guess for its location.
