A little fox came close to us...

A little fox came close to us in Garganta del Pinar, while approaching La Galana. We offered him some power bars and followed us like a dog. 24 May 2002

Re: fox

That's true camp-1, though I had a similar moment with another fox on Sierra de Guadarrama, Madrid (Spain); but I had not the camera with me.

Is it really rare?

Is it really rare? It seems to be accustomed to humans mooching for food like that in your photo. Seems to me you should have NOT fed him. Otherwise, he's now going to be begging for food eating a diet that is not healthy for it. Now all you have is a bigger version of a park squirrel.

Re: Is it really rare?

Agreed.

Don't they have laws or at least unwritten "no-impact" rules that encompass not feeding wildlife? I know this is a general "no-no" here in the US for reasons Brian mentioned.

Re: Is it really rare?

Other species that become habituated to humans create problems. Often they raid dumpsters, eat garden foods, destroy property, and ocassionally harm people. The critters are then often killed.

It's generally best to keep wild animals wild and let them subsist on their natural diet.

Re: Is it really rare?

Hey, hey, stop saying these sentences. I don't use to fed animals, it was only a nice meet with an animal. Stop talking about crazy diets, it was only a power bar. I don't think that a weak fox like this could be turned to a pet. BTW, it came to us, we was not saying "hey come little fox, we have a candy for you" :-/

Well...

camp-1, we have bears in Spain. There are some reserves in Cordillera Cantábrica, Cuenca and the Pyrenees where they have bears.

Re: Well...

Yes Diego i know sorry Austria has some bears too but their not as used to people as the bears in let's say Yosemite or Yellow Stone. And we don't have as many, i believe it is a rare sight to see a bear in europa.

fox

These foxes in Gredos are already a problem. Try to Vivac, particulary at the end of the winter, when they are hungry, and they won´t let you sleep until they steal all your food. I though I was safe from foxes when sleeping in my tent in "garganta del pinar" (not far from there) in May 2004 and a fox made a hole in my tent and kept on coming back all nigth until he took all my food. The fox didn´t even care if I was awake. Ask the locals at "Navalperal de Tormes" what they think about foxes. The goats, however; are very nice.
