Potosi Peak Descent Route [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Potosi Peak Descent Route
This beautiful photo holds much potential danger. To the right you see some orange scree, which is part of the descent route from Potosi Peak, pictured here (the summit tower is at the top of the photo, but the route is not a direct descent by any means).

Potosi's slopes are complex and convoluted, full of cliffs and gullies that are easy to be trapped by and difficult to retreat from. The descent route from Potosi is not too difficult, but study of the mountain is essential to execute the route expediently and safely. Climbers often descend too soon and end up in gnarly situations, cliffed out and trying to escape from grottos such as the one seen here, which directly parallels the last part of the descent route from the mountain.

Be sure to be well briefed before attempting climbing AND descending Potosi Peak.

Photos don't do it justice. It was unexpected to come across such an amazing perspective so close to the road. Looking up the cracks of doom at Potosi...

I love it! "The cracks of doom" wouldn't be a far fetched description, especially if you're a hapless climber trying to find a way off the mountain and you get stuck in such a grotto. Yikes! I know we agree that Potosi can be a very dangerous place to the uninitiated and uninformed. Hopefully our efforts on SP will help steer some folks clear of the hazards. The photos do not do the mountain justice for sure. There is much to respect when you're there in the presence of the beast. Thanks for the comment.
