Ponderosa Pine Bark [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Ponderosa Pine Bark
On hot days, the bark of an adult ponderosa smells like vanilla.
This thick bark is fire resistant.
Young ponderosa's bark is dark gray to blackish. When the tree reaches 45 to 60 years of age, its bark starts to take on a reddish hue.

Photo taken from the South Loop trail at the end of July 2007.
Spring Mountains, Nevada.

..when they have pure orange bark like this they are usually really old, and/or it looks like there is a lot of dense competing vegetation at its base. I've never been to these mountains, is there a lot of ponderosa pine, douglas fir and white fir in the middle elevations, ~7500 to 9000 feet?
