Looking back over the traverse route I followed from the downstream end. Conditions were mostly Class 3, but there were spots of exposed Class 5 where a fall would have meant a dunking in the river, which is deep and slow here but still has treacherous currents beneath the surface. Many people who fall into the Potomac River drown.
