Allen Mountain, Descent [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Allen Mountain, Descent
The descent route from Allen Mountain is visible in this photo. The summit is on the right. At the left end of the summit ridge, the route descends the light colored talus (some pleasant scree skiing can be had) in a direct line toward the camera. The route either enters the gully or stays this side of it as you descend. A break in the cliff band further down can be seen. If you follow the gully, it's a Class 4 undertaking to exit it below the cliff band. It's Class 3 to use the break in the cliffs. More hard packed red talus on a scant use path contours to the camera's position, from where more contouring is done to a wide avalanche gully, where more descending to a park trail takes place. 2006 GMS ascent of Allen Mountain, Glacier National Park.
