Matching plant [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Matching plant
This cusion plant is known as Yareta and it matches Kessler's coat quite well. The plants are located on either side of Cerani. This one is just below the pass on the west side at around 5200 meters elevation.

You might have had trouble distinguishing him from the plant in that case ...:)

Very fun picture!

The Lower MarmotYareta

Voted 10/10

The plant's name is yareta.

They're pretty common at higher elevations in the area.

Yareta is actually very important to many of the indigenous people of southern Peru--when i was living in a Quechua settlement on the south slopes of Coropuna a year and a half ago, i learned that it is their primary source of fuel for fires. If you kick over a yareta plant and break off the green outer, the interior is a dry, dirty wood. It actually burns surprisingly hot and long.

And great shot--i'm really excited about your Cerani page, and can't wait to get there in five or six months.

Thanks!

I saw this image in your gallery and it reminded me of a moss covered boulder that I walked past about 6 weeks ago (which was in Sajama National Park, Bolivia). Certainly the same environment as your Arequipa shot. Thanks for sharing.
