| Berry Eating Bear near Phelps Lake | [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ] |
My 10 year old son Evan spotted his first bear 10 feet off the trail near the Phelps Lake overlook on the way back from summitting Static Peak. His older brother had walked on by without noticing it a minute earlier. With Evan glued to my leg, I struggled to identify if this was a Black Bear, or a Grizzly. As you can see, it is a Black Bear. Thanks to hiking partner Dennis Goldsmith for taking this shot.

Voted 10/10 | Coming face to face with a bear. That's a scary thought for me. About a month ago I saw a mama bear and her cub running away
from us. Thank God for mama bear teaching her cub to run away from people.
Happy climbing,

Hasn't voted | Thanks for the info on the Bear's age. I have no clue about how to age a bear. In my mind the bear is a lot bigger than it looks in this picture - its head sticking up above the bushes gave me quite a start. | | Posted Feb 4, 2009 8:49 pm |
