Chamois on Sasso di Stria [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Chamois on Sasso di Stria
I saw my first chamois 52 years after I first went to the Alps - and then it was on a small mountain you can literally drive up to the foot of. Later the same summer we saw a whole flock of them on a more isolated mountain, Sass da Ciampai, but they galloped away before we could take a photo.

lcarreauThey are goats?

Voted 10/10

Hello, Ejnar! Are these animals
endangered in the Alps? In
America, we have wild goats
found in the high mountains
and passes. They are difficult
to see, because their hide is
the same colour as the snow
and glacial ice. But sometimes,
we get lucky.

No, actually they are antelopes! But they live much as your mountain goats. Apparently they are not protected any longer, so they must have made a comeback, they used to be very rare.
