Middle and North Peaks from South Peak summit
View to the northwest from the summit of South Peak (elev. 5,630 ft.) in the Tres Hermanas Mountains of southwestern New Mexico. Middle Peak (elev. 5,786 ft.) is to the right, and North Peak (elev. 5,802 ft.) is behind Middle Peak (elev. 5,786 ft.). The white object in the center is a U.S. Border Patrol aerostat radar balloon. I passed one of those things around 0500 north of Study Butte, TX after a week in Big Bend. I had no idea what it was. The lights and everything sort of reminded me of Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. I had not idea it was Border Patrol!

I just learned recently what it was myself. It's used for the detection of low-flying aircraft entering the U.S. illegally. Take care, Ray
