Craig Lintz descending up(?) the West Ridge of Pigeon Spire. The route is short and easy, with some major slabs forming V's. On the way up we stayed roped, because we could see that the next section would be harder. It never was. We did one rappel from the summit, then coiled the ropes and descended to our packs unroped.

Hasn't voted | We were enjoying the fog, but we knew the day was in transition. We had hiked from Bugaboo-Snowpatch Col under blue skies. It might have been that same day I saw my most spectacular lightning strike. Craig and I were on the Vowell Glacier, near the SW toe of Snowpatch, When I saw lightning strike the summit of Pigeon. It made a chain of white-hot fireballs, space about 2m apart, all the way down the 330m S face of Pigeon. After the flash, a rock and a chunk of ice, both maybe a half-meter across, tumbled down the face. I wish I could have caught that chain of beads on film!
We were content in the storm, feeling safe in the shadow of Snowpatch, yet safe from ground currents because a large, wind-carved moat separated us from the peak. | | Posted Feb 10, 2008 1:13 pm |
