View along the trail through Thompson Canyon during an ascent of Big Hatchet Peak (elev. 8,356 ft.) in New Mexico's Boot Heel. With a prominence of 3,706 feet, Big Hatchet ranks 8th on New Mexico's prominence list. Small cairns (one is visible straight ahead and another to the left) have been strategically placed along the trail. The trail is easy to follow for the most part, but it does fade in some places.
