Desert Globe Mallow [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Desert Globe Mallow
Globe Mallow blooms (Sphaeralcea ambigua) on Little Pyramid Peak.
Lake Mead Area, Nevada. March 2008.

Globe Mallow is a perennial shrub. It likes sandy washes and rocky terrain below 4000 feet. The leaf hairs of this plant are an eye irritant to some people, thus it's other name - Sore-eye Poppy .

Thank you Big Jordan. These are pretty much the only orange blossoms you will see in the Lake Mead Area of Nevada (yellow wildflowers seem to dominate most areas overall). I was surprised to find them on top of the mountain.
Greetings, Anya.

Globe Mallow blooms in the Red Springs area. I'm sure you know where to find them. I also heard some frogs there, and also heard them at Pittman Wash in Henderson. There appears to be plenty of water this year. Hope people will still conserve it, and appreciate what they have!
