Apennines from Velebit [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Apennines from Velebit
View to remember. Long spine of Italian boot or the Apennines stretching on the other side of Adriatic Sea, seen from slopes of Sveto Brdo (1751m) on South Velebit at sunset. Most fascinating was state of the atmosphere which was such as it actually didn’t exist, no humidity, dust or stuff that usually lowers the transparence. Everything above the horizon was crystal visible. This is best visibility I've ever seen. Head left of the middle is Corno Grande (2912m), highest peak of Apennines, 270km/170miles away! Far right is Monti Sibillini group with Monte Vettore (2476m). Right of the middle is Monti della Laga group with Monte Gorzano (2458 m). Further left, towards south, Majella group (not on photo) was also visible with its highest peak Monte Amaro (2737m) which is around 300km/182miles away. January 31st 2004. This photo shows similar view of Apennines during day, from little bit different position. P.S. Chandra recognized all the peaks, thanks man!

You had another of the Corno Grande but I couldn't find it right away. It was a late afternoon picture.

It was really a perfect day. On same day we were on Velinac peak (perhaps 50 km NW from Sveto Brdo) about 2:30 PM, my wife was sure that she has seen the Apenines. I was a little bit sceptical, thought it was only a play between clouds and sea. Now I believe her.

One of the best pics I ever met on Summitpost! Highest peak of Majella is Monte Amaro (2793 m), Acquaviva is number 2.

Thanks man! I'm sure I'll always remember it, especially if I don't witness such perfect conditions again. It is not that it happens so rarely but being up there at such moment does. Every time I'm on Velebit I stare towards horizon hoping to spot Apennines but usually it is just open sea there.
