Voted 10/10 | Was "The last of the Mohicans" set somewhere around here? (The names suggest so) | | Posted Feb 27, 2009 5:06 am |

Hasn't voted | Fort William Henry on Lake George was the focal point of James Fenimore Cooper's "Last of the Mohicans" novel. The movie of the same name that was released in the early 90s was shot in one of the Carolinas, I believe (that's Hollywood accuracy for you).
Anyway, Lake George was indeed a major player in the French and Indian wars. I've lived most of my life within a 45-minute drive of it and was just up there for a snowshoe hike yesterday. Thanks for checking out the photo. | | Posted Feb 27, 2009 6:59 am |

Voted 10/10 | To Puma,
I read the novel a few times when I was in my teens. I also really liked the movie. As to Hollywood's geographical inaccuracy, as seen from across the Pond, it wasn't that shocking this time. The NE of the US/SE of Canada seems quite the same from here.
As for Zakopane, just try not to come in July or August. Since 10-15 years ago I've kept to the less frequented Slovak part of the Tatras in those months (you can always contact a Polish SP'er for details:))

 | | Catamount | Southeast vs. Northeast | |
Hasn't voted | If I had to compare the woods and mountains of the Northeast US (New York and New England) to those of the Southeast (Virginia through Georgia), the number 1 difference I'd note is that the woods of the Northeast are much thicker. Completely non-practical for shooting a movie. Now, I don't know this is why they didn't shoot the movie in the Lake George region where the events actually occurred but I would suspect this to be at least part of the reason. If anyone else knows, I'd certainly be interested.
That's cool that you enjoy the Slovak side of the Tatras ... I was in Zakopane for only a day as a teenager but still remember it vividly. It is certainly a goal to return to the region one day. | | Posted Mar 1, 2009 6:16 pm |

Hasn't voted | Sorry for the delayed response, Tomek. I was just looking at some photos of Solina Lake and you are right ... there is quite a similarity! | | Posted Mar 1, 2009 7:57 pm |

Voted 10/10 | There's a French man here who has fallen in love with a Polish woman and the Tatras:) He's created quite a few pages about the area:
