Wimp Out on Crab Eyes [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Wimp Out on Crab Eyes

I watched from the bottom as Curtis and Bryan easily climbed up Crab Eyes in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, OK. Most of the route from the very bottom is class 1, with some class 2. However, there is a place where we found it necessary to crawl between two rocks, then to walk along the inclined rocks on the right center of the image while bracing against the rocks in front of you. There's class 4 exposure on both sides, with a narrow, deep crevice that could swallow a body whole between the rocks you're standing on and bracing against. I got out to the large vertical crack and, with no real hand-holds and the rock I was bracing against sloping down, I wimped out. Fifty feet to go and I couldn't quite make it. Imaged in Jun 2008.
