I often get this confused as the second highest peak in Arizona. Actually, it's the THIRD highest, both in Arizona and the San Francisco Peaks area near Flagstaff. My wife and I had reached the Inner Basin at 10,000 feet, and heard some thunder rolling in the distance. Before my wife could say, "Weatherford Trail," some dark clouds rolled in and the wind picked up. We were able to quickly find shelter beneath a huge Corkbark fir. This is the Spruce-fir Forest of AZ's San Francisco Peaks. The 'Inner Basin' Trail offers wonderful hiking in the forest and a flower-filled meadow; it's a steady climb from Lockett Meadow (elev. 8,600 feet) and 3.8 miles one way, ending at the Weatherford Trail. This is the east face of 11,969' (3648 meters) Fremont Peak from the final mile of the Inner Basin Trail. July 2, 2008 Comments [ Post a Comment ]
