| Storm cloud near Capulin.... | [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ] |
Storm cloud near Capulin. Severe storms are possible in the Spring and Summer. I have seen a tornado very close to this mountain. This picture was taken near the summit on the summit trail. The road from U.S. 87/64 to Capulin Volcano National Monument and the trailhead can be seen in the lower right hand portion of this photograph.

Voted 10/10 | This looks more like a regular thunderstorm. It doesn't look menacing enough to be a supercell. Also, it looks to be dissipating, not building. This is evidenced by the lack of cohesion in the cloud structure. It's all over the place, which is generally an indication that outflow winds are shearing it apart. It's losing containment, as it were. Of course, I wasn't there, so I wouldn't know for sure. These are just my observations based on this one picture. | | Posted Feb 14, 2004 11:11 pm |

Hasn't voted | You might be right. I am assuming this one was a supercell since this country is prime tornado country. Most Cumulonibus clouds will rotate out here even if they are not strong enough to produce a tornado. We were driving one year (I am not sure if this was the same year) when my climbing partner looked out the window in threatening weather and saw a funnel cloud. I looked over directly below it and saw that it had reached the ground. It was small and we were heading in the opposite direction but it scared the crap out of us.
On another occasion we were driving away from a storm near here and thought we a long ways away from it. Lightning hit the ground twenty feet from my car along the side of the road. I almost drove off the rode! | | Posted Feb 14, 2004 11:50 pm |
