Panorama of Balaton Uplands

Csobánc hill (375 m) offers one of the greatest views in Hungary (click on larger view to fully enjoy it). This area, called Balaton Uplands is situated north of Lake Balaton (which has the largest surface area in Central Europe). The western part of the "uplands" consists of several characteristic hills of volcanic origin: Badacsony, Szent-György-hegy, Gulács (not to be mixed up with goulash, which is a food), Csobánc and several others. These are not so high mountains, but topologically they stand out well from their surroundings and make a beautiful landscape. This, combined with the view of the lake makes the area highly notable. The 6 (actually 7, but the leftmost one hardly shows) water surfaces belong to the same lake - Balaton! In addition to that, you can find the ruins of a fort on the top of Csobánc. In the 16th and 17th centuries the fort stood against Ottoman attacks, while in the first decade of the 18th century it was the scene of battles against Habsburg rule. Following its seize, it was blown up by the emperor's troops in 1709. In 2003, a local initiative was started to reconstruct the fort. (phtoto taken: 05/July/2008)
