South Maroon Peak [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
South Maroon Peak
Four intrepid "flatlander" climbers traverse unlikely looking terrain on the southwest face of South Maroon Peak. The South Ridge route climbs for .9 mile through terrain such as this, and it is a time-consuming affair. Execute only in outstanding weather conditions!

...I'm on similar stuff too often!
One of our well-known New Mexico climbers, Ungnade, met his maker on the Bells.

Ooo-sorry to hear that. The Bells can be unforgiving. Let the climber beware. Sorry for your loss.

Hi Vic. Bad weather on the Bells is a recipe for disaster, yet we see folks continue with their climbs on the Bells in bad weather routinely. It's sad, but not surprising when a rescue or recovery is performed on them. I've turned around from the Bells on previous ocassions, actually never got near them, due to weather concerns. They are best climbed in either frozen conditions (which I no longer do) or dry, optimal conditions-and even then, they are indeed living up to their reputatin as the "deadly Bells." These mountains command great respect...and they get it.
