A bit too dry for spruce – the western coast catches most of the rain the American way – the aromatic pine takes over some swaths of southern Norway, such as Buskerud County. The track beyond Kvernhus Lake is a gravel forest road in summer and a marked ski/snowmobile trail in winter.

On the horizon rises the eastern edge of Hardangervidda, Norway's largest plateau.
