There wasn't much food in the shops in the towns and villages around the mountains. And at the huts there happened to be nothing but wine, you were happy if you'd managed to buy bread at a kiosk by a chalet.

The cooking gear was pretty heavy and took up lots of space, especially if you preferred ethanol to petrol. Then the fuel (usually about 4 litres per 3-4 weeks) was carried all the way from home.

The jacket I wore was windproof, however, far from waterproof.
