Browns Canyon - Seidel's Suckhole ----- But It Doesn't Look So Bad From Here!
Seidel's Suckhole Rapid - Arkansas River

Here's where the river drops creating a low spot or "hole," where water rushes back upstream against the current, filling the hole with waves. A raft can get "sucked" into this innocent looking backwater and either get stuck spinning around or be folded like a piece of paper and then spit out, minus occupants usually.

Seidel's is rated IV out of V. This is what the International Scale of River Difficulty states about a Class IV rapid: "Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water. Depending on the character of the river, it may feature large, unavoidable waves and holes or constricted passages
demanding fast maneuvers under pressure."

Pressure is an understatement! The name alone builds a picture in your mind of being swallowed alive. Scouting ahead is always required and does nothing to allay novice fears. Post Script: We did just fine!!!
