El Montanon

In May of 2001, I was able to spend a week in the backcountry of Santa Cruz Island on the east end. I spent the entire time surveying the eastern flanks of El Montanon for archaeological sites. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I love that mountain. Here is a collection of my pictures from that trip.

Re: Dude sweet

No. San Clemente and San Nicholas are the Naval islands. How is the arm doing?

Cool stuff...

I am headed to Santa Cruz Island in March while I am seeing friends in Ventura. I am pumped, as it is my first time on the Channel Islands. Do you have an idea when the wildflowers bloom out there? Too bad the whole island isn't owned by the NPS...

By the way...

What did you in terms of archaeological stuff? How did you get involved with that?

Re: By the way...

With the drought I don't really know how the flowers will be effected. I would think May/June would be better. My trip was in March. Very very green! The place is totally beautiful. You should hike the peak, the views are some of the best anywhere.

I studied archaeology in college and volunteered to do some survey work there with a UCSB grad student. It included free transportation and food. Also a chance to camp in the backcountry which isn't allowed. The survey work turned up mostly shell midden sites of the Chumash people. I have three favorite places in California, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, and Santa Cruz Island.

I look forward to your pictures! Have a great trip. Ryan

Memorial Day Trip

I was there on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend at Scorpion Harbor. It was with th entire family so we hiked an easy one along the cliffs to Potato Bay and then back to the campground. The grass was already dry but it did have spectacular views.

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
