World War II B-17 wreckage at... [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
World War II B-17 wreckage at...
World War II B-17 wreckage at the base of Guadalupe Peak. Most of the crewmen of this bomber were killed when it crashed near the main campground in 1943. The wreckage shown is the right main landing gear. The left main landing gear is buried in the hillside nearby. Buried in the side of the mountain are several large hunks of molten aluminum and shards of plexiglass. Shortly before we came to the site the daughter of the pilot came to the park to view where her father had died. Another WW II bomber, a B-24 lies near Bush Mountain although it is much more difficult to find. It is nearly intact. Photo by Pat Speight
