Artists' Paintpots - Yellowstone NP Artists' Paintpots is an area of colorful geysers and hot mud springs located along a loop trail east of the park’s Grand Loop road, about two and a half miles south of Norris Junction. The Paintpots are simply the colorful versions of mud pots. Their color usually comes from the presence of mineral salts. According to park information, this area was closed for part of the summer of 2008 when a woman was injured after a path collapsed. The area she was walking on was previously unknown to be vulnerable to underground thermal activity. Walkways have since been inspected and new boardwalks built.
