Looking up at Mount Index and the largest cornice I have ever seen. Photographed from the west ridge of Philadelphia Mountain, May 28, 2009.

During our hike on Philadelphia Mountain, we saw and heard so many avalanches and slides on Mount Index that day, we knew a walk along that cornice would have been disasterous for any unaware hiker!!!

That's right. It's hard to tell from this photo but that cornice must be overhanging by at least 50 feet.
